Day 13 - Sunday, July 8, 2012 - Destination Bonktown

We left Myers Flat and finished our ride on Avenue of the Giants with warm weather and sunny skies. There was a gradual climb all morning until we got to Leggett, where we started a more meaningful climb.

The elevation in Leggett was about 850 feet. We proceeded to climb an additional 1000 feet, with sweat stinging our eyes in the hot midday sun. On the descent, we dropped 1800 feet into a contrasting cold, misty fog. Along the way we met up with a fellow cyclist, Andy from Switzerland, who informed us it was 88F on one side and 58F on the other side. We muscled our way over the ensuing climbs, including a spirit breaking 600 foot climb.

In Westport, we stopped at a grocery store where we refueled with bagel sandwiches. Upon leaving the Westport Grocery, we met a man and his son, who had come back to that spot where he had stopped with a friend during their coastal ride twenty some years ago. He said the place hadn't changed in all that time...pretty cool.

We grabbed groceries in the next town over, Cleone, and found a campsite at Mackerricher State Park. We covered a total of 86 miles for the day. We made dinner in the misty air and passed out quickly.

  1. Hi Melissa and guys, Looks like the trip is going great, I love all the pictures. Are you taking Hwy 1 now? If so, Fort Bragg is about 43 miles from Leggett. There is a sea glass beach there that is covered in sea glass. If possible it would be fun to see. I hope I get to see you when you get down to my parents area in San Clemente.
    Stay safe and have fun!

  2. So it probably would have been a good idea to look up the state park where you are because then I would have answered my own question. If you get a chance while going through Fort Bragg, turn west on Elm St and go to Glass Beach. It's prohibited to take the sea glass now but i'm sure you can put a few pieces in your pockets. I've never been there but want to some day. It's suppose to be very cool!

    1. Hi Laura! So glad you've been checking out the blog! I definitely saw signs for Glass Beach as we left Fort Bragg, but we were motivated to click some miles in early and we didn't stop. Please let me know if you have any recommendations as we head down the coast!

      Love,
      Melissa
